DIY Air Quality Improvement
Improving air quality in your home begins with a basic household duty: regular house cleaning.
Vacuum & Dust
Routine vacuuming improves neatness while also removing particles that could be cause respiratory problems. Infrequent or incomplete vacuum cleaning can cause severe reactions in people who are sensitive to pet dander, dust, and other debris that collects on carpets and rugs. When you vacuum, you’re not just simply cleaning for appearance’s sake, you’re also safeguarding the health of yourself and your family.
Some experts warn that certain vacuum cleaning machines and improper techniques can be hazardous to your health. All vacuums release dust and allergens back into the air during use, but machines equipped with HEPA (high efficiency particle air) filters will release less dust, allergens, and bacteria into the air than those that do not use them. These filter types generally trap more contaminants than they release, and many manufacturers claim that HEPA filters eliminate 99.9% of bacteria, pollen, and dander from the air.
Protect Bedding
Dust mites are often found in warm, humid environments, like your bedding. For breathing protection, place dust mite covers, to cut off moisture, over your mattresses; covers prevent dust mites from collecting and growing. Wash bedding (and washable stuffed toys) once a week in hot water and dry thoroughly.
Ventilation & AC
Improving ventilation also helps switch indoor air quality. Check for signs of moisture condensation on windows, stuffy air, dirty central heating and air cooling equipment and mold. Moisture build-up creates mold, releasing spores into the air and makes you ill. Air conditioning can keep humidity down and reduce dust mite allergens tenfold.
There are potential sources of air pollution in every room of your house, but don’t despair. The good news is that there are easy and affordable solutions to improve your air quality yourself.
